The Basque Media Observatory has analyzed the audiences of streaming platforms in the Southern Basque Country: How many citizens are subscribers of an audiovisual platform? Which platforms are the most widespread? How does age influence? And language skills?
In order to search for answers to these questions, we analyzed the data of the company CIES, which measures the audience of the media, and which represent the evolution of the consumption of streaming platforms for four years.
The headlines and then a presentation on eight screens with the full exam:One in two people over 14 is a subscriber of a streaming platform in Hego Euskal Herria (six in ten are between 35 and 54 years, seven in ten between 25 and 34 years and almost eight in ten between 14 and 24 years).
Analyzing the subscription data to the 2021 streaming platforms by age, most applications are between 35 and 55 years old, and in the last four years those older than 45 years have been increasing progressively.
Netflix is the platform with the highest number of subscriptions, both in 2021 and in previous years. Among subscribers (half of the population) 85% have a Netflix account (meaning that 42% of the total population has access to this platform). The percentage of subscribers with access to Amazon Prime is 52% (26% of the population) and 22% with access to HBO (11% of the population).
465,200 people are only paid to Netflix, which accounts for 19% of the total population or, likewise, 37% of the population that has a subscription. Some platforms are self-sufficient, others complementary and there is a great tendency to register once in the world of platforms.
In the past four years, the most notable trends are the rise of the Amazon Prime platform (from 26.2% of establishments to 2021) and the continued rise of Netflix.
In the case of Netflix, Amazon Prime and HBO, most of their subscribers are concentrated between the ages of 25 and 54, while, although there are no big differences, the user is somewhat younger on the Filmin or Disney+ platforms.
Seven out of ten subscribers are in Basque, 71% of the population. This is a potential audience and a significant percentage for duplications and subtitles. This is true, although the first language of subscribers is in most cases Spanish (73%).
The higher the Basque knowledge, the higher the tendency to subscribe, with Euskaldunberris having the highest level of subscription to a streaming platform.
